Cornelius

 

 

 

Oregon’s self-proclaimed family town is often overlooked by its bigger neighbor to the west, Forest Grove. In fact, it is hard to really tell where one begins and the other ends along Tualatin Valley Highway. Despite its small size, Cornelius has two big box retailers with a Fred Meyer and a Walmart Supercenter. For a long time, the Fred Meyer there was the closest one for many Hillsboro residents.

 

Originally called Free Orchards, as is the Hillsboro School District elementary school in town, Cornelius was renamed for Benjamin Cornelius, the son of a prominent politician. Interestingly, the city is served by both the Hillsboro and Forest Grove school districts.
